Nordic Track Classic Pro Skier
From LoveToKnow Ski
Whether you are an avid Nordic skier looking for an off-season training plan, or whether you simply want to get into shape, the Nordic Track Classic Pro Skier might be a viable option. The machine was designed to mimic the options of cross-country or Nordic skiing, which makes it an excellent device for sport-specific conditioning.
Benefits of Sport-Specific Training
The Dynamic Pattern Theory of motor learning suggests that the brain is more efficient at memorizing movement patterns than it is at remembering muscular isolations. As such, sports medicine experts have discovered that the best sport-specific training programs make use of movement patterns that clearly mimic the sport. Most people would agree that the movements involved in cross-country skiing are atypical. Furthermore, since the sport involves spending a considerable amount of money, getting enough practice is not always viable.
The Nordic Track Classic Pro Skier effectively mimics the movement patterns of x-cross skiing, making a good alternative for skiers who can never get enough of their sport. Since cross country skiing is one of the best calorie-burning activities, the Nordic Track might also be a good option for people on a weight loss program.
Nordic Track Technology
Many years ago, Nordic Track equipment was composed of two wooden boards and a very basic, if not archaic, design. Times have changed and the company has definitely arrived in the high-tech 21st Century. Here are some of the technical features that you might find on a Nordic Track Machine.
- Space Saver Design: If, like most people, you are concerned about having enough space in your home for exercise equipment, you will be pleased to learn that the Nordic Track Classic Pro uses what is called a space saver design. In other words, it can be folded up and placed under your bed when it is not in use.
- Durasoft Cushioning: Their trademarked Durasoft Cushioning absorbs impact while protecting your joints.
- Coolaire Fans: When temperatures soar, it's hard to imagine that you are actually cross country skiing. Nordic Track has the perfect solution. Just hit the special button, and high-speed fans will provide a rush of cool air.
- Patented Flywheel: The flywheel allows for seven different resistance levels.
- Adjustable Elevation: Unlike alpine skiing, which uses a chairlift, Nordic skiers earn their turns by climbing hills. The Nordic Track allow you to the adjust the elevation, so you can get in shape for those challenging ascents. The elevation system has some excellent side benefits. Climbing hills is a great butt toner, and it burns additional calories.
- LED Feedback Windows: These windows provide information about the time spent on the machine, the distance traveled and the calories burned. It also gives you a read out of your pulse.
Nordic Track Classic Pro Skier Research
When creating the Nordic Track Classic Pro, the developers used a study provided by the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, which concluded that the Nordic Track cross country ski machine can burn 20 percent more calories than a traditional treadmill. In the actual study, the Nordic Track finished ahead of the stair-stepper, the stationary bike and the treadmill. Given that the machine provides both a low-impact and a weight bearing workout, these results are significant.
Weight bearing activity can prevent osteoporosis. However, in most cases, high impact exercise will burn more calories than low impact. Since the Nordic Track Pro uses dynamic lower and upper body movements, it burns more calories, while providing a safer low-impact workout.
Nordic Track Criticism
Like many other forms of exercise equipment, Nordic Track has been subject to criticism. In one case, the criticism actually resulted in a lawsuit. According to an article in Business Journal in 1997, Nordic Track was sued for using deceptive sales techniques and making misleading claims about the effectiveness of the Pro Skier in helping people lose weight. At the time, Nordic Track had a series of television commercials which stated that:
- 70 to 80 percent of people who used a Nordic Track ski exerciser to lose weight lost an average of 17 pounds
- 80 percent of these people kept off all the weight for at least a year
- People who use Nordic Track cross-country ski machines for 20 minutes a day, three times a week, lost an average of 18 pounds in 12 weeks.
According to the FTC, the studies used for these reports were flawed and the Nordic Track company purposely misinterpreted the results. However, weight loss issues aside, nobody can deny the effectiveness of the Classic Pro Skier as an effective cross-training machine for Nordic skiing.
