Naked Skier

From LoveToKnow Ski

Have you ever been lucky (or maybe it's unlucky) enough to find yourself on the slopes when a naked skier flies by you out of the blue? The fact of the matter is naked skiing, while not exactly mainstream, is not that strange a hobby. So You Want to Be a Naked Skier?

The first thing you need to be aware of if you're pondering skiing down the slopes with your clothes off is that you are not alone. There is a small but enthusiastic community of people who like to strip down when they ski, and even those in the ski community who aren't personally comfortable with such activities are typically tolerant of naked skiers. While European slopes are probably a bit more tolerant than those in America, there are resorts in California and Colorado that organize and support events involving naked skiers. Check out this article on naked skiing for specific information about places that have a proven record of embracing clothing optional skiing.

Safety Issues

If you've decided to give this activity a try, you need to confront the very real safety issues that skiing without clothing raise.

  • Frostbite – If there's snow on the ground, common sense tells you that it's probably very cold out. Standing around on the slopes all day can get pretty chilly when you're wearing a down jacket, ski pants, gloves and a beanie, so you can imagine how quickly you'll feel the elements when you're naked. Also, given the fact that some skiers need a little liquid courage to get up the nerve to strip down, their judgment can be further impaired. Frost bite can begin in less than five minutes when temperatures are cold, so make sure you are being realistic and taking the temperature seriously since some pretty sensitive body parts are going to be exposed.
  • Sunburn – Sun damage is a very dangerous issue that modern medicine is becoming more and more aware of every day. Obviously, the more skin you have exposed to the sun, the more potential exists for sunburn. If you have a fair complexion, make sure you take precautions and wear a strong sunblock when you're out on the mountain.
  • Falling – Falling in the snow can hurt tremendously even when you're bundled up in your winter snowsuit. Now imagine sliding across a patch of ice going 20 miles an hour while wearing no clothes. Rough ice can be as hard as concrete, so the effects wouldn't be much different than they would be if you fell off a motorcycle on the street. Of course you can't predict when you're going to fall with total confidence, but you can be careful. Trying out that double black diamond run for the first time when you're naked is not a very wise idea. Make sure you keep it simple and easy.

What About Almost Naked?

Maybe you like the idea of spicing up your skiing experience in a sexy way, but you're not quite ready to take the plunge into total nudity. Again, if you feel this way you are not alone. Many slopes have bikini and bathing suit skiing events where participants break their hottest beach wear out in the dead of winter. While it might not be as extreme as the Full Monty, you can still have a lot of fun and turn a lot of heads wearing next to nothing on the ski slopes.

Take the Plunge

If you're still reading this article, you're obviously still a little curious about giving it a go as a naked skier. Sometimes the best advice to remember is that you only live once. If skiing naked sounds like a fun idea to you, give it a try. Just be careful, and don't leave your common sense back at the lodge with your snowsuit.
