About the Brighton Ski Resort in Utah

Brighton is an affordable, unpretentious ski area that has maintained its historic integrity. Its location in Big Cottonwood Canyon sets it apart from the hustle and bustle of the Park City area resorts. As such, the area is surrounded by dirt cheap hotels, motels and restaurants.

Brighton's "homey" atmosphere is a tribute to its birthright. In the 1850s, William Stewart Brighton and his wife Catherine emigrated from Scotland and homesteaded the area we now call Brighton. At the time, miners on their way to Park City would pass through Brighton, where they would find lodging and hearty meals at the Brighton Hotel. The snowy winter conditions inspired Will Brighton to design crude pairs of skis so that he and his family could move about in the area.

Little did he know that the writing was on the snow. Years later, in 1936, the Wasatch Mountain Club decided to build the first rope tow at Brighton. The area officially became a ski resort in 1955. It was owned by a man named Zane Doyle. Today, his descendants continue to operate Brighton. It is consistently voted as the best value resort in Utah.
